INTERVIEW: KARINE HANNAH On Her "Guilty Pleasures" Show at 54 Below, Advice For Others and Being Asked to Sing at Celine Dion's Wedding

September 25, 2019

Karine Hannah

Karine Hannah talks with RyeTheNewsGuy.com ahead of her show at Feinstein's 54/Below on November 1st, 2019. Karine returns to the stage bringing back her show Guilty Pleasures in which she interprets hit rock & pop classic songs from the '70's, and '80's raido days. Known for her popular show Karine Hannah Sings Streisand, Karine returns with a brand new show. The evening will feature the legendary Clifford Carter on piano, Daniel Dadownick on percussion and background vocals, plus duets with two of New Yorks' most elite singers John James and Keith Anthony Fluitt.

Karine talks with us about the return of Guity Pleasures and her favorite songs, what we can expect from the evening, singing at Celine Dion's wedding, and what comes next!

What can we expect to see during your Guilty Pleasures show at 54 Below?

You can expect to see me along with two incredible back up singers, a legendary pianist and top-notch percussionist perform 38 incredible 70s and 80s songs that you all probably know and secretly love.

What is your favorite song to perform and what are you most looking forward to sing?

I picked songs that I love to sing equally, but if I had to pick my all-time favorite, it would be a song called, “Into The Night”. The course of this song gets me every time! “ if I could fly, I’d pick you up, and take you into the night, and show you a love, like you’ve never seen, ever seen before”

I see that you will be doing some duets— can you tell us who your special guests will be?

Yes! I’m very excited. I will be joined on stage with Keith Anthony Fluitt and John James. They both have performed with classic artists from the 70s, 80s, 90s and present day. They have toured with legends as lead and back up singers.

What do you want people to take away from this show?

I really want people to feel like they’ve been taken on a journey. I love to watch the reaction of the audience as they are hearing songs that they remember but haven’t heard in forever, songs that they might have heard as kids on the radio, remember Radio?

I want them to get joy out of hearing interpretations of songs that they never get to hear live. These are all classic melodies.

Something special is that Celine Dion herself asked you to sing at her wedding. What was that experience like and do you still keep in touch?

Singing at Celine Dion‘s wedding was obviously one of the great highlights in my life and career. It was one of the very first important performances. It’s surreal to think about... looking back at it, it’s really amazing and what an honor, that she chose me.

There was a time for several years that we would be in touch, but our correspondence has faded away, and I haven’t seen her in years.

What is next for you?

I will continue to do live performances and I’m hoping to continue touring with this guilty pleasures show, I think it’s a concept that people really love and I get such a high in making people feel joy for even a couple of hours!

I am also completing many recordings for my next album release. This project has taken longer than anticipated, but sometimes good things are worth the wait.

What advice can you give to others in the music industry? For the ones who are trying to break into it, want their songs out there, but can’t seem to get in the right doors?

Not to worry about record companies in order to release music and gain a following. There was a time when you really needed to be backed by a record label, now with social media you can definitely do it on your own. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a label, but nowadays you don’t need it to get music out there. Actually, a lot of artists who have recorded and placed their music out on social media platforms have on their own become popular and then got picked up by a record company.

Just do what you love and be happy!!
